SGU: Earth (Episode 7)

SGU Episode 7 “Earth” Reviewed by Colonel_Ez Spoiler Potential High With a personal title of “Bit of theatre, always nice” First things first, I’ll apologise up front is this is a little scatty, I’ve had a bit of a weekend and this review is mostly brought to you by energy drinks – apparently I’m talking at twice the speed of normal so who knows what my run on sentences will be like – anyway, onto the review. I have a problem with the use of the stones, the bits about what would happen if one terminal was disconnected or destroyed, I’m not a scientist obviously and its science fiction so its at best theoretical but, to me as a fan of multiple types of science fiction this just didn’t seem believable to me, you have to assume that the local terminal holds the local consciousness. Throughout this episode I found myself dwelling on the question of what should these guys be doing in other people’s bodies, what goes too far, do they get a briefing on what their body donor is allergic to or their pertinent medical history? Chloe is getting boozed in Cousin Liz’ body, Young having sex – I realise it’s not the area of the episode that we as viewers are meant to dwell on but it was a constant distraction to me. I’m hoping that we get more episodes where the body swapping and the ethics relating to are more prevalent, for me personally I feel that anything that distracts this much from the story being told should be addressed as thoroughly as possible All in all I enjoyed the episode a lot, distractions not withstanding, I liked how it answered a few questions, asked a few more but did it all along the way towards something else, and the whole episode wasn’t about it. I have a man crush on Rush it has to be said, Robert Carlyle plays the character perfectly and it was nice to see him do the wrong thing for the right reasons and not have the crew hate him for it, but also not have them trust him either. The Telford character and the moment at the end with him showing up where he showed up, we’ll I don’t know what to make of it, multiple theories but there isn’t enough information yet, one things for certain we aren’t meant to like the guy, I actually yelled at the screen when he ran to the stones when they thought the ship was going to explode. I think as things progress with these body swap episodes they will get a bit smoother, as I said earlier I hope they bring some of the questions about what is and is not ok in another mans skin to the forefront in future episodes as it was playing on my mind a lot. Anyway, that’s me for now, Colonel_Ez, out
