Spoiler Potential High
With a personal title of “I was on a ship and I saw an alien”
Well it’s been a good long while since I did one of these so let’s hope im not too rusty.
This episode has taken over as my favourite episode of the season so far, I like many people was curious to see how they were going to blend action and conflict in with the more character driven stargate that SGU offers but I have to admit to being somewhat prepared for it not to mesh right away, I cannot think of many other occasions I have been so glad to be wrong.
I enjoyed the continued tension between Young and Wray, it would have been easy to let that slide after the events of Justice but its nice to see they chose to keep it up, that being said I hope it finds its way to a resolution of sorts sometime soon, I’m not sure whether it can remain as entertaining as it is for the long haul, it doesn’t have the legs that the Rush/Young dynamic has.
The introductions of the aliens was spectacular, they looked great and opened up so many questions without giving us any solid answers, once again – the information we got was given through Rush & we cant be sure that what he says is true,
How they came to use a technology similar to the communication stones is interesting, it opens up interesting questions regarding the stones in general, how can you risk using them when you may end up in an alien body on an alien ship, I really hope that this in part leads to the stones being out of action for a while, if it doesn’t then there has to be a proper explanation as to why, but SGU has until now avoided getting too far into the science of stargate so im wondering whether this will happen, it’ll become one of my gripes if the stones just continue to be used with the issue not being addressed.
The alien ship showing up in Destiny’s path was interesting, its design was completely unfamiliar although the pods we have seen before of course, the now infamous scene that many missed from the end of Air part three with the pod detaching from Destiny.
The fighter battle was interesting, if anything Scott and Greer were a little too familiar with the shuttle and its operations, as far as we know they have only taken one flight in the shuttle which didn’t involve combat manoeuvres or firing the weapons, even though the jumpers on Atlantis were basically thought controlled we as viewers were still introduced to their functionality, that’s something I think we should have seen before seeing the shuttle in combat and handled so well by its pilot and gunner.
I have to confess to geeking out significantly when I saw the hull cutting section in the trailer, in the few seconds we were shown the light and the section of the hull landing on the deck appeared to be almost identical to the platform used by the rogue Asgard in Atlantis, but that wasn’t the case and I cant say im disappointed, as much as I may have enjoyed it on the surface I don’t think its time to go back to old ground yet.
Young’s actions throughout the episode perplexed me, was he doing his best to defend the ship by ordering Eli to try and destroy it, knowing that Rush and Chloe were on board, or was he trying to cover up for the fact that he’d left Rush on the planet and Chloe was expendable? I know which I’d rather believe and the scene at the end between Young & Rush where Young expresses his regrets sort of confirms it but, I think – as much as I’ve adapted to a murkier stargate… that’s about as murky as I’d like to go.
Final thoughts, I hadn’t noticed until this episode just how similar the computer displays on the Destiny are like the ones in Daniel Graystone’s lab in Caprica
On that note, I think its time to wrap this review up – remember to check out Brian’s review of this episode over on the other SGU review section and to listen to our podcast episode three, where we discuss what we each thought of the episode
