Michael Shanks spent the weekend doing two things at once: confirming what fans had long suspected about Martin Gero's cancelled Stargate series, and pointedly reminding Amazon of what it walked away from.

At Starfury's Ascension 2 convention — running August 28-30 at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole — Shanks appeared alongside his wife and SG-1 co-star Lexa Doig and, according to accounts and photos posted by fans in the hall, confirmed he had been set to reprise Dr. Daniel Jackson in the Prime Video series Amazon MGM Studios scrapped in June. Attendees relayed that Shanks and Gero remain very sad about the cancellation, and that the show would have respected the fans.

Then came the timing. On August 29, Deadline reported from the Edinburgh TV Festival that Prime Video's senior UK scripted commissioner Oliver Jones, asked whether the streamer might become a home for Doctor Who, said he loves the show and would "welcome any conversations around IP" — remarks made alongside Amazon MGM Studios international originals chief Nicole Clemens as the pair outlined plans to significantly increase Amazon's spending on UK content. Shanks quote-tweeted the story with four words: "Really?? Do they? #SaveStargate"

The exchange landed as the #SaveStargate campaign's "Save Stargate with Martin Gero" petition sat at 118,922 verified signatures as of August 29. Organisers ran a signature drive at Ascension 2 over the weekend and have a campaign table planned for Dragon Con in Atlanta on September 3-7, where Shanks is scheduled to appear next. Amazon MGM has not publicly addressed the campaign since the June cancellation.
