Producer Joe Mallozzi Shuts Down Netflix Rescue Rumor as #SaveStargate Petition Tops 67,000
As the fan campaign to revive Amazon MGM's cancelled Stargate series gathers pace, consulting producer Joseph Mallozzi has poured cold water on one of the hopes circulating through the fandom: that Netflix might ride to the rescue. Amazon confirmed in early June that it would not move forward with the series from creator Martin Gero, despite the project completing a 20-week writers' room and entering pre-production in the UK ahead of a planned autumn shoot.
Mallozzi, who served as a consulting producer on Gero's series, did not hold back this week. After the official Amazon MGM Studios account posted an engagement prompt on June 9 asking which TV universe fans would spend the summer in — and was promptly flooded with replies naming Stargate — Mallozzi wrote that "it really feels like, at this point, they're just trolling fandom." When a fan asked him directly about reports that Netflix was interested in licensing the property, he dismissed the claim, calling it "nonsense 'reporting'" from "a few bad actors exploiting fandom frustration."
The producer has also been blunt about the franchise's options. "There is no other platform. Amazon owns Stargate," he told fans, adding that there is no legal mechanism to force a sale of the rights following Amazon's acquisition of MGM. He said Gero himself has stayed silent because he remains bound by an NDA and an overall deal at the studio — meaning the only realistic path to reviving the series runs through Amazon changing its mind.
That is the message the #SaveStargate campaign is pressing. The fan-run hub at savestargate.com — updated June 12 — points supporters toward respectful feedback, letter-writing and the canonical "Save Stargate with Martin Gero" petition, which has now passed 67,000 verified signatures, alongside a fan GoFundMe funding an aerial #SaveStargate banner over Amazon Studios. Amazon MGM has yet to publicly respond to the backlash.
