Brad Wright: "MGM Seemed Excited" by His Post-Continuum Stargate Pilot — "I Can Only Presume Amazon Didn't Like It"
Stargate SG-1 co-creator Brad Wright has offered his most detailed public account yet of the Stargate pilot he wrote for MGM before the pandemic — and where he thinks it died. Replying on X on September 16 to a fan's open message to Amazon MGM Studios asking for Stargate's return, Wright said MGM asked him to write exactly the kind of show fans were describing after he finished his Netflix series Travelers: new and legacy characters working together against an entirely new enemy, set several years after the events of the 2008 film Stargate: Continuum, in which he says he planted a hint of the setting.
"I wrote a pilot I was proud of, and MGM seemed excited, but obviously the timing could not have been worse," Wright wrote, according to Bleeding Cool, which quoted the post in full. "I can only presume Amazon didn't like it." That lines up with what Wright told fans at FedCon in 2025, as reported by GateWorld: MGM commissioned the script just before COVID shut down production, then the studio's president was fired and Amazon bought MGM — "and that was that for that project."
Wright also addressed the more recent cancellation of Martin Gero's series, which Prime Video scrapped in June after roughly twenty weeks of pre-production. He said he was "100 percent behind Martin and his team," calling their cancellation "even more heartbreaking because they got so close." His conclusion was philosophical rather than combative: "In other words, we tried. Martin will go on to make something amazing. I may even have another show in me. But I have moved on."
The comments arrive a day after Richard Dean Anderson described the Amazon project as feeling like "a dead issue," and as the #SaveStargate campaign's Change.org petition continues to climb.
