Richard Dean Anderson: Amazon's Stargate "Didn't Seem Like a Reboot" — Daniel Was the Bridge, and It Now Feels Like "a Dead Issue"
Richard Dean Anderson has given his own account of Amazon MGM Studios' cancelled Stargate series, and in his telling it was never really a reboot. Speaking on the "Chevron Seven Locked" SG-1 reunion panel at Rose City Comic Con in Portland on September 11, moderated by ScreenRant's Ash Crossan, Anderson said the project "technically didn't seem like a reboot more than it was using Michael Shanks' character, Daniel, well again, as the conduit that would take us from our show, from our universe to the next generation of it."
That lines up with Shanks' own confirmation two weeks ago that Daniel Jackson was coming back, but Anderson went further on why the show stalled. Stressing that he is guessing from the outside, he pointed to "the politics going on over the reboot" and suggested that "something has gone awry in the negotiations, or the development, or who's going to run it, who's going to control it." Amazon's official line in June was that the series' creative direction no longer aligned with its programming strategy; the show had completed a 20-week writers' room and was in pre-production in the UK when it was pulled.
On the prospects of a revival, Anderson was blunt but careful: "It feels, to talk to Michael about it, that it's kind of a dead issue. I don't know that for sure. Please don't spread the word." He did, however, point fans to the #SaveStargate campaign by name, calling the situation "such a sad commentary." The fan campaign continues to push Amazon to reverse the decision, though nothing in Anderson's remarks suggests any change in the show's status.
Anderson himself had already said before the cancellation that he would not appear in the new series. He shared the Rose City stage with SG-1 co-stars Ben Browder and Tony Amendola, with Joe Flanigan, Rachel Luttrell and Torri Higginson also appearing at the convention over the weekend.
