#SaveStargate's Mystery "Near-Space" Event Gets a New Date — August 22 — as the Petition Clears 117,000
The #SaveStargate campaign's long-teased "near-space" stunt finally has a firm date on the books. The fundraiser bankrolling the fan effort, organised by James Kerfoot, now lists a "Special Near-Space Event" for Saturday, August 22nd, with details still marked TBA. The campaign had previously flagged the event for August 8, so the new listing pushes it back a fortnight. On the campaign's own events page, the entry remains simply labelled "SPACE" — status "CLASSIFIED".
Everything ahead of it on the organiser's list is now ticked off: the aerial banner flown over Amazon MGM's Culver City lot on June 16, the Times Square rally and digital billboards on June 27, the international rally on July 18–19, and a special Comic-Con event on July 25. The GoFundMe behind those actions currently sits at $19,278 raised of a $20,000 goal, from 521 donations. The fundraiser is an independent fan effort and is not affiliated with Amazon, MGM or the Stargate rights holders.
Meanwhile the campaign's lead petition, "Save Stargate with Martin Gero!", has kept climbing. Change.org's live counter shows 117,854 verified signatures at the time of writing, with 79 added on the day of publication — more than two months after Amazon MGM Studios decided not to proceed with Gero's series in early June. The petition addresses Amazon directly, arguing that a built-in fanbase is a foundation rather than a limitation.
There is still no public response from Amazon MGM, and no detail yet on what "near-space" will actually involve. We'll update when the campaign says more.
