Original Stargate Movie Streams Free on Pluto TV Starting July 1

The film that started it all is getting a free new home. The 1994 Stargate movie, directed by Roland Emmerich and co-written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin, begins streaming free on Pluto TV starting July 1, 2026. The movie stars Kurt Russell as retired Air Force Colonel Jack O'Neil and James Spader as Egyptologist Dr. Daniel Jackson, who travel through the titular device to a distant world ruled by the despotic Ra, played by Jaye Davidson.

Stargate was a box-office hit on its original release, grossing roughly $196 million worldwide against a $55 million budget, and went on to launch a television franchise spanning Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe, and the animated Stargate Infinity, along with two direct-to-DVD films. Reviews were mixed at the time and remain divided among critics today, though the film has held up well with audiences.

The free streaming release lands during an otherwise rough stretch for the franchise. Amazon MGM Studios halted its in-development Stargate series from Martin Gero in early June, prompting the ongoing #SaveStargate fan campaign to petition for its revival. The original movie is also available on Prime Video and Fawesome, and for rent on services including Prime Video and Spectrum On Demand.
